The Role of Constraints and Discontinuities in Visible-Surface Reconstruction
Proceedings of the Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. Vision. Pages 1073-1076.
Abstract
Computing representations of visible swfaces is a jimdwnental task of early vision. It necessiwtes ovacuming the problems of (i) integral· ing multiple suurcrs of visual injimnation, (it) ril'aling with .1urji1ce discontinuitie5; (iii) intetpo/ating surfaces from sparse constraints, and (iv) achieving computational efficiency. We have recell/ly developed multilevel surface reconstructiOn algorithms that solve the last two problems. In this paper, we gmera/ize our previuu .s work by presenting formal solutions to problems (i) and (ii). Specifically, we show how scaflered depth and orientation constraints can be integrated and how to treat discontinuities in both Lhe depth ami orientation of surfaces. A substmuial/y more co mplete computational theory of visible-surface represell/ations is th ereby proposed.
