Nonmonotonic Reasoning and Multiple Belief Revision
Proceedings of the Fifteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. Automated Reasoning. Pages 95-100.
Abstract
Th e aim of the present pap er is to reveal the interrelation between general patt erns of nonmonotonic reasoning and multiple belief revision. For this purpose we define a nonmonotonic inference fr ame in which individual infe rence ru les have been proposed in the lit era tur e but their combinat ion as a system has not been invest igat ed. It is shown that such a system is so strong that almost a ll th e rul es (including the supracompactness) suggested for nonmonotonic inference relations in the lit erature hold in it. We prove that this nonmonotonic inference frame is strictly co rr espe nd e nt with multiple be li ef revision operation. On the basis of this result we analyse a specific paradigm of defult theory which satisfies all the rul es und er consideration and discuss limitations of met hods based on consequence relations for the study of nonmonotonic reasoning.
