Compositional Model-Based Design
Proceedings of the Thirteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. Qualitative Reasoning and Naive Physics. Pages 1445-1449.
Abstract
Generative model-based design of physical devices is difficult because the space of candidate design solutions is typically very large, and the cost of testing each candidate design to verify that it .satisfies the desired behavior is substantial. In this paper, we present compositional model-based design (CMD), which addresses these problems by adopting a divideand-conquer strategy and by interleaving design generation and testing. The CMD method divides the specified behavior into separate fragments and constructs locally correct design fragment~ for each. The design fragments are then incrementally composed until a design for the entire specified behavior is obtained. We show how the CMD may be used for the conceptual design of a steam-boiler control system.
