Abstract

This paper describes the preliminary results of the first research effort toward a Mandarin dictation machine in the worl~ fo.r the input. of Chinese characters to computers. Considenng the special charact~stic~ of Chinese language, syllables are chosen as the basic umts for dictation The machin.e is divided into two subsystems. The first is to recog~uze the syllables using speech signal processing t~chmques. Because .every syllable .can represent many different characters With completely different meaning the second subsystem then identifies the exact characters fro~ the sylla?les and cot;ects the erro~ in syllable recognition by first forrmng a.ll P?SSible words froin the syllables then finding out one combmanon of ~e :-vords which is grammatically valid in a s~nte~ce . .The preh.mmary test results indicate that such a dicta!IOn mac:hme IS not only practically attractive, but technically achievable.
