Abstract

Little i' clearly unrler stoo d about the similarities, dilferences, ·and comparative computational arHl representational adva ntages of the many proposals extant for organizing minds into collections of "mental subagents ." Using a new m at hematical framework for exactly specifying the structure of mental organizations, we formulate separately t-he ideas of multiple pe.·s pect.ivcs, reasoned assumptions, and virtual copies. WhP-n combined, thf'se notions form a conimon backbone for systems as diverse a.• CONLAN, NETL, and FOL, and show many particular characteristics of those systems results of the "language of thought" adopted for representing th e contents of mental subagents. The framework also sug~csts connections between the "strengths" of r;,ental attitud es, the ambiguity of "self," and the possibilit.ies for selfon, niscicnce.
