Using Language and Context in the Analysis of Text
Proceedings of the Seventh International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. Natural Language. Pages 52-56.
Abstract
We describe a theory of natural language understanding within which we identify two separate co mponents, a language centered one and a context centered one. 1he former component uses a knowledge base consisting of pairings of phrases with the concepts associated with them to determine the meaning of utterances. The latter component clarifies the meaning found by the first one and makes it more specific by attempting to reconcil e it with the conte xt of the utterance. We have co nstructed a program called PHRAN (PHRasal ANalyzer) whi ch performs the task of thP language cente red component.
