Abstract
Artificial intelligence as well aa neur ophysiological studies of recent decades sugg est a unitary view of language, in which natu ral language constitutes only part of the tot al language of the organism; the latter is a singl e but complex structure containing also the s ymbol-systems and their transformations respon sible for mental processes. Following Sloman , the dogma that communication is the main function of language is opposed , and impli cations of the unitary thesis i n respect of a number of linguistic and psycho logical questi ons are briefly discussed.
