Despite recent advances in AI systems, including Large Language Models (LLMs), they still struggle to perform analogical reasoning reliably. In this project, we get inspiration by cognitive theories of analogy and try to develop models that can better capture and perform analogical reasoning. As a key component, we investigate abstraction levels and study how to best extract and represent them. In addition, we systematically analyze the limitations of LLMs by developing a dataset annotated with analogical structure and explore fine-tuning approaches to improve their analogical reasoning abilities.","doi":"10.24963/ijcai.2026/944","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2026/944","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2026/0944.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2026/944.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2026/bibtex/944","volume":{"slug":"2026","title":"Proceedings of the Thirty-Fifth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2026","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2026/","year":2026,"location":"Bremen, Germany","dates":"15-21 August 2026","editors":"Diego Calvanese","isbn":"978-1-956792-09-6","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization","doi_prefix":"10.24963/ijcai.2026"},"section":"Doctoral Consortium","track":"Doctoral Consortium","number":944,"pages":{"first":8331,"last":8332},"keywords":["Humans and AI: Cognitive modeling","Machine Learning: Neuro-symbolic methods/Abductive Learning","Natural Language Processing: Language models","Knowledge Representation and Reasoning: Learning and reasoning"],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
