Over the past two decades, Constraint Programming (CP) has provided a complementary paradigm: combining generative models with a constraint solver to guarantee feasibility. This survey reviews the main concepts behind these CP-driven hybrid approaches, from enforcing ubiquitous structural rules (e.g., length and patterns) to preventing plagiarism. It synthesizes how learned models can be treated as constraints, compiled structures, or probabilistic factors. We highlight what has remained stable across applications, then discuss how these principles transfer to the Large Language Model era and outline open challenges for controllable and trustworthy generative systems.","doi":"10.24963/ijcai.2026/864","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2026/864","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2026/0864.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2026/864.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2026/bibtex/864","volume":{"slug":"2026","title":"Proceedings of the Thirty-Fifth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2026","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2026/","year":2026,"location":"Bremen, Germany","dates":"15-21 August 2026","editors":"Diego Calvanese","isbn":"978-1-956792-09-6","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization","doi_prefix":"10.24963/ijcai.2026"},"section":"Survey Track","track":"Survey Track","number":864,"pages":{"first":7777,"last":7786},"keywords":["Search: Combinatorial search and optimisation","Multidisciplinary Topics and Applications: Arts and creativity","Constraint Satisfaction and Optimization: Constraint programming","Machine Learning: Generative models"],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
