We show that METCL is able to improve both state of-the-art Large Language Models (e.g DeepSeek-R1, GPT-4o, Qwen2.5-Max) and symbolic ones in the task of metaphor identification. Additionally, we show how the metaphors generated by METCL are generally well accepted by human subjects. The obtained results are encouraging and pave the way to research in automatic metaphor generation and comprehension based on the assumption that metaphors interpretation can be partially regarded as a categorization problem relying on generative commonsense concept combination.","doi":"10.24963/ijcai.2025/1146","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2025/1146","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2025/1146.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2025/1146.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2025/bibtex/1146","volume":{"slug":"2025","title":"Proceedings of the Thirty-Fourth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2025","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2025/","year":2025,"location":"Montreal, Canada","dates":"16-22 August 2025","editors":"James Kwok","isbn":"978-1-956792-06-5","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization","doi_prefix":"10.24963/ijcai.2025"},"section":"Human-Centred AI","track":"Human-Centred AI","number":1146,"pages":{"first":10316,"last":10324},"keywords":["IJCAI25: Human-Centred AI"],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
