It is empowered by advanced techniques to progress to more complicated tasks that require strategical and motivational interactions. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive overview of the prominent problems and advanced designs for conversational agent's proactivity in different types of dialogues. Furthermore, we discuss challenges that meet the real-world application needs but require a greater research focus in the future. We hope that this first survey of proactive dialogue systems can provide the community with a quick access and an overall picture to this practical problem, and stimulate more progresses on conversational AI to the next level.","doi":"10.24963/ijcai.2023/738","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2023/738","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2023/0738.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2023/738.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2023/bibtex/738","volume":{"slug":"2023","title":"Proceedings of the Thirty-Second International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2023","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2023/","year":2023,"location":"Macao, SAR","dates":"19-25 August 2023","editors":"Edith Elkind","isbn":"978-1-956792-03-4","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization","doi_prefix":"10.24963/ijcai.2023"},"section":"Survey Track","track":"Survey Track","number":738,"pages":{"first":6583,"last":6591},"keywords":["Survey: Natural Language Processing"],"videos":[],"references":[{"position":1,"raw":"[Aliannejadi et al., 2019] Mohammad Aliannejadi, Hamed Zamani, Fabio Crestani, and W.
