I survey key tendencies that people exhibit when they construct explanations and make inferences from them, of relevance to the provision of automated explanations for decisions by AI systems. I first review experimental discoveries of some tendencies people exhibit when they construct explanations, including evidence on the illusion of explanatory depth, intuitive versus reflective explanations, and explanatory stances. I then consider discoveries of how people reason about causal explanations, including evidence on inference suppression, causal discounting, and explanation simplicity. I argue that central to the XAI endeavor is the requirement that automated explanations provided by an AI system should make sense to human users.","doi":"10.24963/ijcai.2023/733","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2023/733","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2023/0733.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2023/733.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2023/bibtex/733","volume":{"slug":"2023","title":"Proceedings of the Thirty-Second International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2023","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2023/","year":2023,"location":"Macao, SAR","dates":"19-25 August 2023","editors":"Edith Elkind","isbn":"978-1-956792-03-4","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization","doi_prefix":"10.24963/ijcai.2023"},"section":"Survey Track","track":"Survey Track","number":733,"pages":{"first":6536,"last":6544},"keywords":["Survey: AI Ethics, Trust, Fairness","Survey: Humans and AI","Survey: Machine Learning"],"videos":[],"references":[{"position":1,"raw":"[Adadi and Berrada, 2018] Adadi, A., & Berrada, M.
