The goal of this work is to reduce the authoring burden for creating sifting queries. In this paper, we use the event traces of simulated storyworlds to create Dynamic Character Networks that track the changing relationship scores between characters in a simulation. These networks allow for the fortunes between any two characters to be plotted against time as a story arc. Similarity scores between story arcs from the simulation and a user’s query arc can be calculated using the Dynamic Time Warping algorithm. Events corresponding to the story arc that best matches the query arc can then be returned to the user, thus providing an intuitive means for users to sift a variety of stories without coding a search query. These components are implemented in our experimental prototype ARC SIFT. The results of a user study support our expectation that ARC SIFT is an intuitive and accurate tool that allows human users to sift stories out from a larger chronicle of events emerging from a simulated story world.","doi":"10.24963/ijcai.2022/686","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2022/686","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2022/0686.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2022/686.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2022/bibtex/686","volume":{"slug":"2022","title":"Proceedings of the Thirty-First International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2022","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2022/","year":2022,"location":"Vienna","dates":"23-29 July 2022","editors":"Luc De Raedt","isbn":"978-1-956792-00-3","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization","doi_prefix":"10.24963/ijcai.2022"},"section":"Research Papers","track":"AI and Arts","number":686,"pages":{"first":4950,"last":4956},"keywords":["Application domains: User interfaces","Theory and philosophy of arts and creativity in AI systems: Evaluation of artistic or creative outputs, or of systems","Theory and philosophy of arts and creativity in AI systems: Support of human creativity","Methods and resources: Other methods or resources","Application domains: Games","Application domains: Ideation","Theory and philosophy of arts and creativity in AI systems: Autonomous creative or artistic AI","Application domains: Text, literature and creative language"],"videos":[{"label":"Video #1","url":"https://slideslive.com/38987169","length_sec":90,"provider":"slideslive"},{"label":"Video #2","url":"https://slideslive.com/38985312","length_sec":711,"provider":"slideslive"}],"references":[{"position":1,"raw":"[Behrooz et al., 2015] Morteza Behrooz, Reid Swanson, and Arnav Jhala.
