To realize this potential, mechanisms are needed that allocate vehicles optimally and provide the right incentives to riders. However, many existing approaches consider restricted settings (e.g., \r\nonly one rider per vehicle\r\nor a common origin for all riders). Moreover, \r\nnaive applications of standard approaches, such as the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves or greedy mechanisms, cannot achieve a polynomial-time, truthful, individually rational and budget balanced mechanism. To address this, we formulate a general ridesharing problem and apply mechanism design to develop a novel mechanism which satisfies all four properties and whose social cost is within 8.6% of the optimal on average.","doi":"10.24963/ijcai.2021/38","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2021/38","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2021/0038.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2021/38.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2021/bibtex/38","volume":{"slug":"2021","title":"Proceedings of the Thirtieth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2021","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2021/","year":2021,"location":"Montreal","dates":"19-27 August 2021","editors":"Prof. Zhi-Hua Zhou","isbn":"978-0-9992411-9-6","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization","doi_prefix":"10.24963/ijcai.2021"},"section":"Agent-based and Multi-agent Systems","track":"Main Track","number":38,"pages":{"first":268,"last":275},"keywords":["Agent-based and Multi-agent Systems: Coordination and Cooperation","Agent-based and Multi-agent Systems: Economic Paradigms, Auctions and Market-Based Systems","Multidisciplinary Topics and Applications: Transportation"],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
