Towards a deep understanding of these languages in model theory, we establish model-theoretic characterizations for a number of existential rule languages such as (disjunctive) embedded dependencies, tuple-generating dependencies (TGDs), (frontier-)guarded TGDs and linear TGDs. All these characterizations hold for the class of arbitrary structures, and most of them also work on the class of finite structures. As a natural application of these results, complexity bounds for the rewritability of above languages are also identified.","doi":"10.24963/ijcai.2020/269","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2020/269","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2020/0269.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2020/269.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2020/bibtex/269","volume":{"slug":"2020","title":"Proceedings of the Twenty-Ninth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2020","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2020/","year":2020,"location":"Yokohama","dates":"January 2021 (postponed from 11-17 July 2020)","editors":"Christian Bessiere","isbn":"978-0-9992411-6-5","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization","doi_prefix":"10.24963/ijcai.2020"},"section":"Knowledge Representation and Reasoning","track":"Main track","number":269,"pages":{"first":1940,"last":1946},"keywords":["Knowledge Representation and Reasoning: Description Logics and Ontologies","Knowledge Representation and Reasoning: Logics for Knowledge Representation","Knowledge Representation and Reasoning: Knowledge Representation Languages"],"videos":[{"label":"Video","url":"https://videos.ijcai20.org/25130/file_25130.m3u8","length_sec":272,"provider":"hls"}],"references":[{"position":1,"raw":"[Abiteboul et al., 1995] Serge Abiteboul, Richard Hull, and Victor Vianu.
