When two words in a sentence are said to agree, this means that they share certain features such as gender, number, person or others. The primary hypothesis of this paper is that marking agreement within one linguistic phrase reduces processing effort as phrasal constituents can more easily be recognized. The drive to reduce processing effort introduces the rise of agreement marking in a population of multiple agents by means of an incrementally aligned mapping between the most discriminatory features of a particular linguistic unit and their associative markers. A series of experiments compare feature selection methods for one-to-one agreement mappings, and show how an agreement system can be bootstrapped.","doi":"10.5591/978-1-57735-516-8/IJCAI11-022","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2011/22","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2011/0022.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2011/22.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2011/bibtex/22","volume":{"slug":"2011","title":"Proceedings of the Twenty-Second International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2011","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2011/","year":2011,"location":"Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain","dates":"16–22 July 2011","editors":"Toby Walsh","isbn":"978-1-57735-512-0; 978-1-57735-513-7; 978-1-57735-514-4; 978-1-57735-515-1; 978-1-57735-516-8","publisher":"AAAI Press/International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":null,"track":"","number":22,"pages":{"first":61,"last":65},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
