Despite its importance, little is known of the ultimate strengths and limitations of the technique. This paper presents the first precise characterization of clause learning as a proof system, and begins the task of understanding its power. In particular, we show that clause learning using any nonredundant scheme and unlimited restarts is equivalent to general resolution. We also show that without restarts but with a new learning scheme, clause learning can provide exponentially smaller proofs than regular resolution, which itself is known to be much stronger than ordinary DPLL.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2003/170","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2003/0170.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2003/170.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2003/bibtex/170","volume":{"slug":"2003","title":"Proceedings of the Eighteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2003","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2003/","year":2003,"location":"Acapulco, Mexico","dates":"","editors":"Georg Gottlob","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":null,"track":"","number":170,"pages":{"first":1194,"last":1200},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
