The framework uses natural language generation techniques and a probabilistic student model to selectively introduce gaps in the example solution, so that the student can practice applying rules learned from previous examples in problem solving episodes of difficulty adequate to her knowledge. Filling in solution gaps is part of the meta-cognitive skill known as selfexplanation (generate explanations to oneself to clarify an example solution), which is crucial to effectively learn from examples. In this paper, we describe how examples with tailored solution gaps are generated and how they are used to support students in learning through gap-filling self-explanation.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2001/171","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2001/0171.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2001/171.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2001/bibtex/171","volume":{"slug":"2001","title":"Proceedings of the Seventeenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 2001","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/2001/","year":2001,"location":"Seattle, Washington, USA","dates":"","editors":"","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":null,"track":"","number":171,"pages":{"first":1301,"last":1305},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[{"position":1,"raw":"Aleven and Ashley 1997]","title":null,"authors":"Ashley Aleven","year":"1997","venue":null,"doi":null,"url":null,"internal_url":null},{"position":2,"raw":"Aleven, V. and K.
