However, determining the winners so as to maximize revenue is NP-complete. We present a search algorithm for optimal winner determination. Experiments are shown on several bid distributions. The algorithm allows combinatorial auctions to scale up to significantly larger numbers of items and bids than prior approaches to optimal winner determination by capitalizing on the fact that the space of bids is necessarily sparsely populated in practice. We do this via provably sufficient selective generation of children in the search and by using a method for fast child generation, heuristics that are accurate and optimized for speed, and four methods for preprocessing the search space.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/78","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/0078.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/78.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/bibtex/78","volume":{"slug":"1999","title":"Proceedings of the Sixteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1999","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/","year":1999,"location":"Stockholm, Sweden","dates":"","editors":"Thomas Dean","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Distributed AI","track":"Distributed AI","number":78,"pages":{"first":542,"last":546},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
