The agents start with no knowledge of the sound system at all. Although none of the agents has a global view of the language, and none of the agents does explicit optimization, a coherent vowel system emerges that happens to be optimal for acoustic distinctiveness. The results presented here fit in and confirm the theory of Luc Steels [Steels 1995, 1997, . 1998] that views languages as a complex dynamic system and the origins of language as the result of self-organization and cultural evolution.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/53","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/0053.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/53.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/bibtex/53","volume":{"slug":"1999","title":"Proceedings of the Sixteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1999","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/","year":1999,"location":"Stockholm, Sweden","dates":"","editors":"Thomas Dean","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Cognitive Modeling","track":"Cognitive Modeling","number":53,"pages":{"first":364,"last":368},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
