'l;his paper generalizes the existing model to make it suitable for dynamic composition of information retrieval techniques. The new framework addresses effectively the uncertainty associated with the duration and output quality of each component. We show how to construct an optimal meta-level controller for a single task based on solving a corresponding Markov decision problem, and how to extend the solution to the case of multiple and dynamic tasks using the notion of an opportunity cost.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/180","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/0180.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/180.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/bibtex/180","volume":{"slug":"1999","title":"Proceedings of the Sixteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1999","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/","year":1999,"location":"Stockholm, Sweden","dates":"","editors":"Thomas Dean","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Uncertainty and Probabilistic Reasoning","track":"Uncertainty and Probabilistic Reasoning","number":180,"pages":{"first":1268,"last":1272},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
