Memory ensures that individuals are not only well adapted to the current members of the opposite population but also to earlier generations of opponents. A balanced (co)evolution, on the other hand, adapts the speed of evolution (i.e. the reproduction rate) to the performance of a population. It leads to a steady progress in both populations. Indirectly, a balanced (co )evolution avoids a premature loss of genetic diversity. This in turn, diminishes the need for a long memory span. The current paper shows how both mechanisms can be incorporated in Coevolutionary Genetic Algorithms (CGAs). Empirical results support the importance of, and interaction between, both mechanisms.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/172","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/0172.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/172.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/bibtex/172","volume":{"slug":"1999","title":"Proceedings of the Sixteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1999","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/","year":1999,"location":"Stockholm, Sweden","dates":"","editors":"Thomas Dean","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Search","track":"Search","number":172,"pages":{"first":1212,"last":1216},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
