WordNet, as a hand-crafted and general-purpose thesaurus, intuitively should also work fine in information retrieval, but unfortunately, experimental results by many researchers have not been promising. Th ereby in t his p aper we investigate why the use of WordNet in informat ion retrieval has not been successful. Based on this analysis we propose a method to combine WordN et with pr edicateargument-based and co -occurrence-based automat ica ll y co n structe d t hesauri. Experiments using large test collection shows that our method results in a significant improvement of information r etr ieval performance.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/131","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/0131.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/131.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/bibtex/131","volume":{"slug":"1999","title":"Proceedings of the Sixteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1999","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1999/","year":1999,"location":"Stockholm, Sweden","dates":"","editors":"Thomas Dean","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language Processing","track":"Natural Language Processing","number":131,"pages":{"first":920,"last":924},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
