In contrast with deduction, understanding logical aspects of induction and analogy is still an important and challenging issue of artificial intelligence. This paper describes a logical formalization, called preduction, of common conjectural reasoning of both induction and analogy. By introduction of preduction, analogical reasoning is refined into \"preduction + deduction\" and (empirical) inductive reasoning is refined into \"preduction + mathematical induction\". We examine generality of preduction through applications to various examples on induction and analogy.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1997/32","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1997/0032.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1997/32.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1997/bibtex/32","volume":{"slug":"1997","title":"Proceedings of the Fifteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1997","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1997/","year":1997,"location":"Nagoya, Japan","dates":"","editors":"Martha E.
