Abstract

The traditional goal of compu t er vis ion , to recons truct , or recover properties of, the scene has recently been challenged by advocates of a new purposive approach in which the vision problem is defined in t er ms of the goals of an active agent . In th e starkest light th e debate can be c haracteri zed as one about th e role of exp licit repr ese ntations . The extreme traditionalists strive for a detail ed re pr ese ntation of the 3D world while the other ex tr em e adopts a strict be haviorist stance which esc hews representations in favor of "direct sensing . " This panel will ex plore the roles of action, representation , and purpose in computer vision and, in doing so, will hopefully dis cover areas of agreement .
