We delineate two categories, viz ., canonical salience and instantial salience, characterizing the former as a builtin preference in the conceptual- and linguistic knowledge of the speaker, and the latter as the prominence of specific objects in the context of NLG. This paper proposes that the interaction between these categories be formalized in terms of decision-theoretic combinations of probabilities and utilities, and construes phrase selection and basic level/entry level effects accordingly.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1993/172","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1993/0172.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1993/172.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1993/bibtex/172","volume":{"slug":"1993","title":"Proceedings of the Thirteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1993","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1993/","year":1993,"location":"Chambéry, France","dates":"","editors":"Ruzena Bajcsy","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language","track":"Natural Language","number":172,"pages":{"first":1246,"last":1251},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
