## Abstract

In [d el Val and Shoham , 1992] we showed that the postulates for belief update recently proposed by Katsuno and Mendelzon [1991] can be analytically derived using the formal th eo ry of action proposed by Lin and Shoham [1991] The ront ribution of this paper is twofold: • VVh ereas in [del Val and Shoham, 1992] we o nl y showed that our encoding of th e upd ate problem satisfied the KM postula tes. here we use an independently motivat Pd generalization of the theory of action us ed in t hat pap er to provide a one-to-one co rr es pondence between our construction a nd 1\ M updat e semantics. • VV e show how th e KIVI semantics can lw ge neralized by relaxing our construction in a numb er of ways, each justified in n' rtain intuitiv e circumstances and each corr es ponding to one specific postulate. It. fo llows that. there are reas onabl e upda.t.e ope rators outside the KM family.
