While it seems impossible to express default logic in existing forms of circumscription, is it nevertheless possible to express default logic in a certain extension of circumscription? This paper presents a construction of \"default logic\" in the spirit of circumscription. It has been shown that the new formalism, circumscriptive extension, is indeed an extension of circumscription. The equivalence of the new formalism and default logic is shown to hold under certain conditions, which demonstrates that default logic can be expressed by merely classical logic with a fixed point operator.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/66","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/0066.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/66.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/bibtex/66","volume":{"slug":"1991","title":"Proceedings of the Twelfth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1991","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/","year":1991,"location":"Sydney, New South Wales, Australia","dates":"24-30 August 1991","editors":"John Mylopoulos and Ray Reiter","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Knowledge Representation","track":"Knowledge Representation","number":66,"pages":{"first":438,"last":444},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
