We describe a computational approach that emulates the human capability of predicting interactions of simple objects depicted In two dimensional diagrams. Three core aspects of this approach are a visual representation scheme that has symbolic and imaginal parts, the use of visual processes to manipulate the imaginal part and to extract spatial information, and visual cases that encode experiential knowledge and play a central role in the generation of spatial Inferences. These aspects are described and the approach is illustrated with an example. Then we show that reasoning with Images is an emerging and promising area of Investigation by discussing computational and cognitive research on imagery.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/54","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/0054.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/54.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/bibtex/54","volume":{"slug":"1991","title":"Proceedings of the Twelfth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1991","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/","year":1991,"location":"Sydney, New South Wales, Australia","dates":"24-30 August 1991","editors":"John Mylopoulos and Ray Reiter","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Cognitive Modeling","track":"Cognitive Modeling","number":54,"pages":{"first":360,"last":364},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
