Previous alignment methods were mostly limited to the recognition of specific rigid objects, allowing only for rigid transformations between the model and the viewed object. The current work extends previous alignment schemes in two main directions: extending the set of allowed transformations between the model and the viewed object, and using structural aspects of the internal models, namely, their part decomposition. The compensating transformation is divided into two parts. The first, rough alignment, compensates (approximately) for changes in viewpoint and is derived by matching tangential points on the silhouette of the model and the viewed object. The second, the adjustment transformation, is derived by matching local features - discontinuities of the contour orientation and curvature. Principal aspects of the scheme suggested here are also relevant for the recognition of flexible objects.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/185","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/0185.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/185.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/bibtex/185","volume":{"slug":"1991","title":"Proceedings of the Twelfth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1991","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/","year":1991,"location":"Sydney, New South Wales, Australia","dates":"24-30 August 1991","editors":"John Mylopoulos and Ray Reiter","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Vision","track":"Vision","number":185,"pages":{"first":1257,"last":1262},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
