Within this approach it becomes natural to represent inherently multilingual grammars and semantics. The approach rests on the linguistic notion of functional similarity and difference: by capturing the functions languages need to perform, we achieve a level of linguistic description which carries across languages far more effectively than accounts that are structurally based. We demonstrate the general principles, implementation, and benefits of the approach with respect to three unrelated languages: English, Chinese, and Japanese.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/142","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/0142.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/142.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/bibtex/142","volume":{"slug":"1991","title":"Proceedings of the Twelfth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1991","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/","year":1991,"location":"Sydney, New South Wales, Australia","dates":"24-30 August 1991","editors":"John Mylopoulos and Ray Reiter","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language","track":"Natural Language","number":142,"pages":{"first":966,"last":970},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
