The purpose of this paper is to show how one difficult-to-explain feature of these dialogues, confirmations, follows from the joint or team nature of the underlying task. Specifically, we review the concept of a joint intention and we argue that the conversants in a task-oriented dialogue jointly intend to accomplish the task. From this basis, we derive the goals underlying the pervasive use of confirmations observed in a recent experiment. We conclude with a discussion on generalizing the analysis presented here to characterize dialogue itself as a joint activity.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/140","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/0140.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/140.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/bibtex/140","volume":{"slug":"1991","title":"Proceedings of the Twelfth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1991","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1991/","year":1991,"location":"Sydney, New South Wales, Australia","dates":"24-30 August 1991","editors":"John Mylopoulos and Ray Reiter","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language","track":"Natural Language","number":140,"pages":{"first":951,"last":958},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
