We introduce the concepts of topology and texture to characterize problem structure and areas to focus attention respectively. The resulting model redu~es search complexity and provides a more prmcipled explanation of the nature and power of heuristics in problem solving. We demonstrate the model of Constrained Heuristic Search in two domains: spatial planning and factory scheduling. In the former we demonstrate significant reductions in search.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1989/49","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1989/0049.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1989/49.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1989/bibtex/49","volume":{"slug":"1989","title":"Proceedings of the Eleventh International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1989","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1989/","year":1989,"location":"Detroit, Michigan, USA","dates":"August 20-25 1989","editors":"N.
