I describe a program which can automatically construct such models for machines like mechanical clocks or watches. The program finds an appropriate set of state variables and determines how they change as time passes. The abstract model of the mechanical device may be used to numerically simulate its behavior. My program uses short, controlled simulations to identify repetitive behavior patterns which can be used for long-term behavior prediction.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1989/196","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1989/0196.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1989/196.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1989/bibtex/196","volume":{"slug":"1989","title":"Proceedings of the Eleventh International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1989","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1989/","year":1989,"location":"Detroit, Michigan, USA","dates":"August 20-25 1989","editors":"N.
