The system, CYPRESS-SOAR, reproduces most of CYPRESS' behavior in the synthesis of three divide-and-<:anquer sorting algorithms from formal specifications. CYPRESS-Soar is based on heuristic search of problem $Jl&ceS, and uses search to compensate for missing knowledge m some instances. CYPRESS-Soar also learns as it designs algorithms, exhibiting significant transfer of learned knowledge, both within a single design run, arid across designs of several different algorithms. These results were produced by re1mplementing just the high-level synthesis control of CYPRESS, simulating the results of calls to CYPRESS' deduction engine. Thus after only two months of effort. we had a surprisingly effective research vehicle for investigating the roles of search, knowledge, and learning in this domain.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/67","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/0067.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/67.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/bibtex/67","volume":{"slug":"1987","title":"Proceedings of the Tenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1987","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/","year":1987,"location":"Milan, Italy","dates":"","editors":"John McDermott","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Knowledge Acquisition","track":"Knowledge Acquisition","number":67,"pages":{"first":327,"last":329},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
