We prove that a complete theory of probabilistic logic requires the a priori assignment of 21t-l probabilities for a system with k basic propositions. We also show that a ·proposal due to Cheeseman, namely, to regard measures of confidence in knowledge systems as expectations that are conditioned on unknown distributions, does not work in general. We demonstrate this by showing that several certainty measures proposed for expert systems are not consistent with the derived inequalities for probabilistic logiCs.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/193","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/0193.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/193.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/bibtex/193","volume":{"slug":"1987","title":"Proceedings of the Tenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1987","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/","year":1987,"location":"Milan, Italy","dates":"","editors":"John McDermott","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Reasoning","track":"Reasoning","number":193,"pages":{"first":939,"last":940},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
