The problem is approached as one in which a word image is transformed through a representational hierarchy of levels based on descriptions that use points, contours, features, letters, and words. Global control is hierarchical until an intermediate level after which it is heterarchical. Two modes of learning are defined: supervised training with user feedback and unsupervised adaptation to the writer.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/177","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/0177.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/177.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/bibtex/177","volume":{"slug":"1987","title":"Proceedings of the Tenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1987","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/","year":1987,"location":"Milan, Italy","dates":"","editors":"John McDermott","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Perception","track":"Perception","number":177,"pages":{"first":844,"last":846},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
