We descnbe two 1ssues that must be considered when building such an interface for an expert system. These issues are semantic processing of the user statements and the design of an interpreter for the expert system that efficiently utilizes the facts entered by the user. The semantic approach is based on verb categorization ~nd hierarchical structuring of each category. The parsmg algorithm based on selectional restriction is directly encoded into each verb class hierarchy. Next, we describe Director, an interpreter for rule-based expert systems that efficiently utilizes these facts for inferencing. Director uses a combination of forward and backward chaining that gives full consideration to each fact entered by the user and enables the system to process input in an efficient and focused manner.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/135","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/0135.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/135.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/bibtex/135","volume":{"slug":"1987","title":"Proceedings of the Tenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1987","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/","year":1987,"location":"Milan, Italy","dates":"","editors":"John McDermott","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language","track":"Natural Language","number":135,"pages":{"first":682,"last":686},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
