A solution to this problem requires sentence processing which allows semantic representations to be evaluated incrementally, as a phrase is read from left to right. The paper shows how a proposal made by Mellish (I985), to regard incremental semantic evaluation as a constraint satisfaction task, can provide a natural solution to the problem of reference. The incorporation of Combinatory Categorial Grammar allows a straightforward relationship to be stated between the incrementally assembled syntactic and semantic representations.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/130","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/0130.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/130.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/bibtex/130","volume":{"slug":"1987","title":"Proceedings of the Tenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1987","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1987/","year":1987,"location":"Milan, Italy","dates":"","editors":"John McDermott","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language","track":"Natural Language","number":130,"pages":{"first":661,"last":662},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
