The following functions of daydreaming, for both humans and computers, are discussed: support for processes of creativity, future planning and rehearsal, learning from successes and failures, emotion modification, and motivation. A computational theory of daydreaming is being implemented and tested in a computer program called DAYDREAMER. A prototype version of DAYDREAMER which produces several daydreams (in English) is currently running.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/51","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/0051.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/51.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/bibtex/51","volume":{"slug":"1985","title":"Proceedings of the Ninth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1985","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/","year":1985,"location":"Los Angeles, California, USA","dates":"","editors":"Aravind Joshi","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Cognitive Modelling","track":"Cognitive Modelling","number":51,"pages":{"first":278,"last":279},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
