The theory postulates that competition for activation by nodes/concepts in a network is a fundamental principle of memory retrieval. Using only excitatory connections between concepts, a specific implementation of this model is able to demonstrate \"virtual lateral inhibition\" between competitors and other interesting behaviors that have required use of explicit inhibitory connections in the past.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/45","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/0045.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/45.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/bibtex/45","volume":{"slug":"1985","title":"Proceedings of the Ninth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1985","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/","year":1985,"location":"Los Angeles, California, USA","dates":"","editors":"Aravind Joshi","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Cognitive Modelling","track":"Cognitive Modelling","number":45,"pages":{"first":244,"last":247},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
