The paper discusses some of the tactics that bad been used in previous systems to overcome the combinatorial explosion that is inherent in any planning problem. It then continues with a description of SPAN architecture. Two case studies are presented. The first, from the blocks world, is already implemented, and the second, from the domain of bridge playing, is in the coding stage. SPAN's limitations are discussed and directions for further research are considered.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/212","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/0212.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/212.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/bibtex/212","volume":{"slug":"1985","title":"Proceedings of the Ninth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1985","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/","year":1985,"location":"Los Angeles, California, USA","dates":"","editors":"Aravind Joshi","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Planning and Search","track":"Planning and Search","number":212,"pages":{"first":1047,"last":1050},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
