Abstract

Thls paper descrlbes a transportable natural language Interface to databases, augmented wlth a knowledge base and tnference techntques. The tnferance mechantsm. based on a classtcal expert system's type of approach. allows. when needed, to automatlcally convert an Input query lnto another one whtch ts •samanttcally close•. Accordtng to RESEDA's theory, •semantlcally close• means that tha answer to the transformed query tmpltes what could have been the answeF" to the ortgtnal quastton . The presented system lntegratas natural language processlng, expert system and kriowladge representatlon technology to provlde a cooperattve database access.
