The theory is based on the thesis that discourse structure is a composite of three structures : the structure of the sequence of utterances, the structure of intentions conveyed , and the attentional state. The distinction among these components is essential to provide adequate explanations of such discourse phenomena as clue words, referring expressions and interruptions . We illustrate the use of the theory for four types of interruptions and discuss aspects of interruptionl! previously overlooked .","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/164","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/0164.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/164.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/bibtex/164","volume":{"slug":"1985","title":"Proceedings of the Ninth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1985","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/","year":1985,"location":"Los Angeles, California, USA","dates":"","editors":"Aravind Joshi","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language","track":"Natural Language","number":164,"pages":{"first":832,"last":838},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
