We discuss the motivation for descriptions in a system called DLOG. We describe two approaches to specifying their semantics, and a method for implementing their use . We explain why some descriptions should be given a higher order interpretation, and explain how such descriptions can be interpreted in the simpler logic of Prolog. The essential idea is to constrain the domain of descriptions so that an extended unifica.tion procedure can determine description equivalence within the Prolog framework .","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/139","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/0139.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/139.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/bibtex/139","volume":{"slug":"1985","title":"Proceedings of the Ninth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1985","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1985/","year":1985,"location":"Los Angeles, California, USA","dates":"","editors":"Aravind Joshi","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Logic Programming","track":"Logic Programming","number":139,"pages":{"first":711,"last":715},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[{"position":1,"raw":"G.
