Abstract
A set of &eneral tnowled&e structure manipulation primitives is proposed. These proceasin& elements lar&ely eliminate the need for a separate theory of inference. The elements are presented in terms of an abstract characterization of the understandin& task. The processin& theory is pven as a particular realization of this characterization.
