It extends t he hierarchical tree representation by all owing multiple causes to a given manifestation. We develop an updating scheme that obeys the axioms of probability, is co mputationally efficient, and is compatible with experts reasoning. The belief parameters of each variable are defined and updated by those of its neighbors in such a way that the impact of each new e vidence propagates and settles through the network in a single pass.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/45","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/0045.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/45.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/bibtex/45","volume":{"slug":"1983","title":"Proceedings of the Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1983","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/","year":1983,"location":"Karlsruhe, West Germany","dates":"","editors":"Alan Bundy","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Expert Systems","track":"Expert Systems","number":45,"pages":{"first":190,"last":192},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
