## Abstract

An rx tmnum principle is de1 • elup ed that determines thr ee -dimensional surface ori entation from a /ll'u -Jimcmio nal cuntour. The principle maximizes the ratio of th e area to th e square of th e perimeter, a measure of th e compactness or S)' 111m c t1y of the thre e-dimensional swface. The princip le inlelprets re g ular figures correctly, it in terprets skcll' symmetrics as ur iellled real syn11nNrics. and it is approximated by th e maximum likdihoud method on irregular figures.
