Not only must their lexical subsystems handle a large number of known words; they must also cope with coinages. The morphological principles underlying the notion \"possible word\" are under active study by linguists, and are articulated in the theory of word formation . This paper presents a technique for building lexical subsystems which embody these prin-ciples by emulating the behavior of word formation rules. These subsystems combine totally idiosyncratic lexical information, stored in a dictionary, with systematic information derived from word struc-ture. Applications for lexical subsystems built along the lines described here will be discussed.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/170","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/0170.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/170.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/bibtex/170","volume":{"slug":"1983","title":"Proceedings of the Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1983","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/","year":1983,"location":"Karlsruhe, West Germany","dates":"","editors":"Alan Bundy","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language","track":"Natural Language","number":170,"pages":{"first":704,"last":705},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
