The definite versus indefinite distinction is viewed as a manifestation of the variable depth of nominal phrase processing. The depth of processing is determined by the availability of resources, which is indirectly controlled by the speaker with sufficient precision; articles appear to be only some of several resource control devices available in natural language.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/162","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/0162.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/162.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/bibtex/162","volume":{"slug":"1983","title":"Proceedings of the Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1983","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/","year":1983,"location":"Karlsruhe, West Germany","dates":"","editors":"Alan Bundy","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language","track":"Natural Language","number":162,"pages":{"first":675,"last":676},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
